Streets Alive

Town Team Movement, in partnership with the State Government and the Western Australian Local Government Association (WALGA), announced the Streets Alive program earlier this year. The program, funded from State Funds for Local Government Roads, consists of $5 million over 5 years for capacity building and support for eligible community organisations and local governments, for projects designed to calm traffic on local roads in urban areas across WA.

Stage 1 offered ‘seed’ grants of $5,000 for eligible community groups and local governments in all towns and neighbourhoods across WA. The Shire of Moora was successful in their application for Stage 1. Our initial project will include artwork on the pavement and corner areas at the intersection of Dandaragan and Roberts Streets. If you are a local artist and are interested in helping bring this to life, please contact Amy Watts before Friday 2nd August on 043 993 5091 or mcd@moora.wa.gov.au.

Stage 2 offers grants of up to $100,000 to eligible community groups and local governments in all towns and neighbourhoods in WA. Our submission for Stage 2 is underway and we are asking Moora locals for their ideas and feedback, and we are looking for local artists who would like to work on the project.

After gathering insight from local people (sitting outside of IGA/Foodworks for a few hours over two days) an area that was consistently emphasised as unsafe was the intersection of Roberts and Dandaragan Streets, and outside the IGA. This area has the highest foot and car traffic in Moora, the street is not particularly wide, it is a main freight route, and has parking on both sides. The area around IGA with the Gull, BWS, and Swimming Pool is bustling with activity year-round.

Some of the initial ideas put forward include:
  • Rejuvenating the four undercover tables and chairs on Dandaragan Street
  • Painted planters along the town centre on Dandaragan Street in bright colours
  • Flashing traffic signs
  • Large colourful signs and planters
  • Painting the parking spots around IGA (Roberts Street) in bright colours
  • Bollards on the pool and IGA sides of Roberts Street
  • Covers for the rubbish bins in Dandaragan Street
  • Sculptures of heavy machinery, farming equipment or flower sculptures

To put forward your ideas, please contact Amy Watts on 043 993 5091 or mcd@moora.wa.gov.au.
